WHY ZERO WILL NOT WORK

The last few years have not been great for shahrukh khan. Fan was an ambitious project but was marred with a below par script. Raees was supposed to be a realistic hard hitting  semi biopic on Abdul Latif but was woven with too much masala to be taken very seriously. Something similar can be said about srks previous projects like dilwale (ddlj meets rohit shetty bikes) and jhms. The problem seems to be about srk than the directors. It looks like he wants to be ambitious but fears the Box Office outcome. All his recent projects seem compromised at varied levels. His forthcoming movie Zero directed by Anand L Rai seems to be following similar trend.

Here is the first teaser of zero

srk is playing a dwarf in it. The vfx team claims to be have worked very hard to create an accurate dwarf character. But if you analyse it , the gimmick seems more than obvious. check the picture from the teaser below

It appears that  vfx team has simply zoomed out srk's body from neck onwards while keeping the head same. Dwarfism is characterized generally with disproportinate body where there are either short limbs or a short torso. Here are pictures of real life dwarfs:

You can see clear deformity and asymmetry in their body proportion with big head, thick short legs, protruding knees and a very disproportionate torso. This is how an actual dwarf looks. Here is a pic of a well known dwarf actor lilliput . Compare his body structure to what srk is in zero

Liliput has the typical dwarf characteristics of a asymmetrical torso, short thick legs, protruding headline and chin.  Here is pic from Kamal Hassans appu raja where he played a dwarf character. This movie came in 1990 but look at the perfection done by kamal hasan back then. Compare it to srk's perfect symmetrical lower body with absolutely proportional arms , legs and torso.

Now there are two possibilites why this has been done

1) srk , like his previous movie trends, wants to be ambitious enough to play a dwarf but doesnt want to go all out with it. He does not want to look disproportionate (ugly) . This beats the purpose of playing such a character and it comes across as a gimmick

2) The vfx team merely zoomed out his lower body without going into basic details of what dwarf people structure actually is.  This is poor work ethics on part of the vfx team.

If we talk about the film from a mass appeal point of view, dwarf characters have not really worked well except appu raja. When you play a dwarf character, you are already on the backfoot as you would be either doing self-deprecating humour or trying to gain sympathy. Its not a heroic role which masses can relate to. Add to it, this kind of gimmick makes it look like the intention of making the movie is not right. It is made to please critics as well as to please those srk fans who dont want him to look deformed. Zero looks neither here or there. Perhaps thats what the box office of the movie might also be.
