Baba Health series Part 1 : Misconceptions of weight loss

This is my first post for the health series where I wish to share some of my own training experiences and knowledge based on research regarding misconceptions of weight loss.

Most people think that spending two hours at the gym or eating less will make them lose weight. Both are delusions.IMO gym is nothing but a fad to make money. You pay the fees but the instructor will not guide you beyond the first week. After a month or so,it becomes just a place to hang out with friends.Do not waste money on it.Instead a 30-40 min proper intense workout even at home can give better result.

Many think that doing a 1-1.5 hr long continuous cardio everday will cause significant weight loss. This is the biggest misconception.Your RMR (resting metabolic rate )remains elevated for only 1-2 hours following a typical cardio workout. Conversely, your RMR remains elevated for up to 1-2 days following a strenuous training session ( high intensity exercises) in which a large quantity of your skeletal muscle has been traumatized.I can vouch for this from personal experience. I am a Shotokan Karate practioner myself and we train only twice a week! Moreover our training session is not continuous but always broken down into stop-start sessions where the whole body is pushed to limits. There are times when I can hardly walk back home because my whole body is exhausted, the muscles are traumatised. But this is where the secret lies. This trauma created in your muscles during such training is the process of muscle protein breakdown. Then, in the hours and days following that intense training session, your body must repair the damaged muscle. This is called muscle protein synthesis. During this whole process, your RMR is elevated due to the repair work your body is performing. Hence, you end up burning a lot more additional calories from this residual RMR increase than you would have from the those long continuous cardio training sessions.

Excessive cardio training actually can cause a loss of lean muscle mass, therefore decreasing your RMR. the lower your RMR, the harder it’s going to be to lose any more body fat and easier to store body fat if you happen to overeat. Most competitive sports are also based on stop-and-go movement or short bursts of exertion followed by recovery.
Another benefit of variable intensity training is that it is much more interesting than long boring steady state cardio programs.
A 20-minute high intensity interval training session is much more effective than a 40-50 minute boring steady pace cardio session due to several factors like residual metabolic after-burn effect, muscle retention, hormonal response, heart rate variability, etc. It will also save you time!
Keep your workouts shorter but intense; your best results will most likely come from keeping your workouts between 30-60 minutes in length.

 ________________________________________________________________

But just exercise alone is not sufficient.Eating habits are the sole reason that most people never lose weight no matter how hard they train. And No! Eating less doesnt help lose weight. This is another biggest misconception.

While people do experience initial weight loss with crash diets, it is actually a loss of lean muscle, which will lower your RMR, making it easier to put the fat back on in the long run.

One of the first reasons people experience an initial quick weight loss with a low carb diet is that they lose water weight by depleting their muscle glycogen stores. Muscle glycogen stores are basically stored carbohydrate in all of your skeletal muscle. A significant quantity of water is also held in the muscle cells of the body along with the glycogen. When you deplete your muscle glycogen stores, you also lose a good bit of water weight. You might have noticed that a persons muscles appear smaller (kind of shrunken) when they go on a low carb diet.

When you eat carbohydrates, they are broken down in your system and raise your blood sugar. Your pancreas secretes insulin to remove the excess sugar from your blood and deposit it into fat stores.Slow and steady carbohydrate sources are ideal because they give you steady energy levels, reduce cravings, and allow your body to utilize fat for energy in addition. The more unrefined and fibrous the carbohydrate source the slower the carbohydrate will be digested, and the lower and more steady the blood sugar and insulin response.More heavily refined starches and sugars where the fiber has been removed will be digested much more quickly and cause a higher blood sugar spike and subsequent crash after insulin has done its job. People who eat a lot of refined processed carbohydrates typically go through these cycles of blood sugar spikes and crashes, which causes them to crave more carbohydrates and leads to body fat gain.

The blood sugar level can be managed by what is called the glycemic index (GI) of foods.Basically, foods that raise your blood sugar quickly will have a higher GI and foods that raise your blood sugar slowly and to a lower degree will have a lower GI. Examples of foods with high GI’s are white rice, white bread, white potatoes, corn flakes, crispy rice cereals, sugars (except fructose), ice cream, bananas, cooked carrots, candy, and any other refined carbohydrates where the fiber has been removed. Examples of foods with lower GI’s are most dairy products, most fruits and vegetables, whole unrefined grains, sweet potatoes, barley, beans, and most other higher fiber carbohydrate sources.

Now that you are aware of the misconceptions,in next part i will talk about the 30-40 mins intense workout. :D

Kranti - Unintentional comedy

To quite a few, kranti may be a great film but I always thought it had the makings of a "Clerk" in the future. But here I present only a song from the film that the bhelpuri waala will be proud of.Lyrics are inspiring to say the least. The real genius of the song starts form 2.44.

"Mera Chana khaa gaye gore
 Jo ginti mein hain thode
Phir bhi maare humko khode"

Excellent metaphor usage I would say except that it made me allergic to Chanas for the rest of my life.

But manoj kumar was just a disciple of DK.DK being the senior goes one step further

" Mera chana hai apni marzi ka
ye dushman hai khudgarzi ka
sar kafan baandh ke nikla hai
deewana hai ye pagla hai"

If chana coud be replaced with willy,i think those lines might make better sense.

what are DK,MK doing at 6.28? Why hema malini has covered her navel with that patch of cloth but she has a bare back? Why is that toonda at 6.36 in the battalion which intends to fight british? May be reservation seat under PH category.

Gangs of Bhos**pur

Before giving a review of the film,I need to make an appeal to  Anurag Kashyap :

Dear Anurag,When will you shed your small townish sex obessesed mentality and ruin your films? What is this infatuation with the ‘Bhosdaa’ of the woman and the “gand” of the man? It is necessary to give your sexual perversions so much prominence to your film and characters? Is it not possible for you to write a script which is compelling on its own?And this is not the problem with you alone. Its the same case with your fellow small townies  Imtiaz Ali (Rockstar) and Habib Faisal (Ishaqzaade).

Now on the film,GOW was basically meant to be a revenge film. There is a conflict shown between the Quereshi (Butcher) gang and the Pathan (upper class muslim) gang. Then there is a Hindu MLA also in the proceedings which looked  like the main villain of the film. The first 20 mins or so are very engaging .The historical references were blended with the story quite well. The character of Bajpai’s father is written pretty good who is a pathan.I liked all his scenes. After his death, the film loses its way.Manoj bajpai’s character speaks  how the revenge of his dead father is the sole aim of  his life but never quite shows the urgency towards it.Instead he is chilling out in the film,he  seems more interested in having sex with his wife and almost every other woman. The film forgets the conflicts with the Quereshis and the hindu MLA and focuses on the affair of manoj and his Bengali whore. Now few such scenes are alright but there is a limit to irrelevance.I mean who is interested in watching manoj bajpai in speedos! At times anurag is reminded of the core story ,so after all the perverted timepass scenes ,he would add few scenes relevant to the plot.If you thought GOW is about gangster revenge drama and politics, you are more wrong than right. To compensate for the lack of drama, anurag has filled the movie with unnecessary profane language. But even there he doesn’t quite succeed bcos it seemed as if everyone in wasseypur only knows one abuse ‘bhosdi ke’ .May be I need to give them some tutorials on abuses. But I will charge the ticket money. Then there are chronological errors too in the film.Trishul is being watched in theatre in 1985.

In the climax, anurag is again reminded of the basic story so manoj talks about the revenge thing again but its too late by now as 2.5 hrs have passed. In the end it says “abhi baaki hai”.I  replied “Tu shuru ki kab hua?seedhe part 2 hi banata”
Rating – 2/5 (story had potential, manoj is good)

Collection of cult dialogues : Veergati

If there is one film that can challenge Sholays cult dialogues, then Veergati is the one that comes to my mind.Salman Khans little talked about gem of 1995 is my most favourite salman film.Yes it was inspired by Nana Patekars krantiveer a lot in both characterisation of the lead as well as the basic premise to some extent. While Krantiveer was made in response to Mumbai riots in 1992,Veergati was more like a follow up to Krantiveer. In Karan Arjun also Salman played a similar character where he overshadowed srk. Below are some of my favourite dialogues in the film:
 1) (Salman is accused of attempting murder)

"Dafa 302 likh ke takhti ko hare ped pe taang do to woh bhi sookh jaata hai"

2) (Salman's response to Inspector who tries to sympathise with Constable's son)

"Naam Neelkanth....lekin tumne woh zehere nahi piya jo mere rag rag mein hai.Philhaal yahi kaafi hai ki main hawaldaaar ka beta nahi"

3) (Salman speaks why he doesnt bath often)

"Pehle nehlaati hai dai, phir nehlaate hain chaar bhai....sirf do hi baar nahata hai aadmi"

Agneepath and references from The Bible: Goliath Vs David

Excerpts from Hrithik interview : Link

Audiences will still try to compare you with the old Vijay.

No, the moment you see my Vijay, that comparison will go away. People will come to see Vijay Deenanath Chauhan, but when they look at me, they will think he doesn't look like Vijay, he is nothing like Vijay, he is nobody, he doesn't have style, he doesn't have that swagger, that walk, not even the voice..

Their expectations are broken now and they will see the film keeping me in mind.

Is it true that you said Agneepath is the toughest film of your career?

Yes. The climax of the film was shot in Diu. It was so hot and throughout the climax, I am fighting Sanju sir (Sanjay Dutt), who looks like a Goliath compared to me. My clothes were torn and I was almost bare-bodied, there was blood make-up all over me. I had to fall and I was getting hurt. I was like this for 22 days, so it ended up being the toughest schedule of my life.

Do you think the character of Kancha will overpower Vijay, that people will like him better?

They should like him better in the beginning of the film and they should think that a fight between Kancha and Vijay is impossible. They should feel that Vijay is nothing in front of Kancha, and then the trajectory of the film should convince the audience of the David-Goliath impossibility.

If you think the mission is impossible, that makes the film more entertaining. If it was easy and if we were equals, you would not enjoy the journey. The fight is between a common man and a Goliath.

The Goliath-David Bible story Summary background:

The Philistine army had gathered for war against Israel. The two armies faced each other, camped for battle on opposite sides of a steep valley. A Philistine giant measuring over nine feet tall and wearing full armor came out each day for forty days, mocking and challenging the Israelites to fight. His name was Goliath. Saul, the King of Israel, and the whole army were terrified of Goliath.
One day David, the youngest son of Jesse, was sent to the battle lines by his father to bring back news of his brothers. David was probably just a young teenager at the time. While there, David heard Goliath shouting his daily defiance and he saw the great fear stirred within the men of Israel. David responded, "Who is this uncircumcised Philistine that he should defy the armies of God?"

So David volunteered to fight Goliath. It took some persuasion, but King Saul finally agreed to let David fight against the giant. Dressed in his simple tunic, carrying his shepherd's staff, slingshot and a pouch full of stones, David approached Goliath. The giant cursed at him, hurling threats and insults.

David said to the Philistine, "You come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the Lord Almighty, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied ... today I will give the carcasses of the Philistine army to the birds of the air ... and the whole world will know that there is a God in Israel ... it is not by sword or spear that the Lord saves; for the battle is the Lord's, and he will give all of you into our hands."

As Goliath moved in for the kill, David reached into his bag and slung one of his stones at Goliath's head. Finding a hole in the armor, the stone sank into the giant's forehead and he fell face down on the ground. David then took Goliath's sword, killed him and then cut off his head. When the Philistines saw that their hero was dead, they turned and ran. So the Israelites pursued, chasing and killing them and plundering their camp.

My review: Hornystar XXX

Ask a western whats the commonest frustration an average Indian has and immediate reply would be "sex-deprivation".If you are on facebook, you must have noticed that its Indians who lead the number of fake profiles for dirty chatting online.Director Imtiaz Ali got it bang on here as the premise of Ranbir's Hornystar journey is the same - "sexual frustration".Even Ranbirs mentor in the film argued that music comes from pain and dissastisfaction. ;)So Ranbir had to look for a girl who would match his Horny-meter to pull the wild sex-hungry beast hidden inside him that would help him become a rockstar he always wanted to be.

Imtiaz is known for writing eccentric characters for his heriones in previous films which just about borders sluttiness but in anycase those were straight girls. But in Hornystar,he went a notch higher.Nargis fakri comes across as a bisexual :)
Agreed that she likes watching men pee and makes ranbir watch males stripping, but then she loves feeling and caressing nude women and Pros in topless bars and dressing like a man to watch B grade semiporn flicks in theatres.
She also suffers from a weird medical problem where her blood count is proportional to her sex count! The more she is deprived of sex,the worse her medical condition gets ranging from being unable to walk to as extreme as Coma lol!Imtiaz also shows how a single attempt at kiss can make her walk!
You must be thinking why am I talking about sex and not about Ranbirs journey as a Rockstar.Lets be clear, there is no journey here. Its more a failed sex story between two people who have unmatchable sex count :)

The only moments were you feel the movie stuck to its supposed theme are the ones that Ranbir provides with his buffoneries in first half and even for most of the second half as the sexually deprived rockstar.Songs have been trimmed poorly though Saada Haq and Nadaan Parindey is shot well.

There is a lot of sexual tension betweem Ranbir and Nargis throughout the film but still one never quite feels the chemistry so to speak.More so,because Nargis is a pathetic actress.Although she has wild fantasies. The chemistry feels more like a protected sex where the pleasure is missing :D

Which brings me to the climax. In a nutshell, the climax reminds me of Kites minus the ocean with an imaginary Nargis walking upto Ranbir on stage under proper spotlight and all lol :D
I could not figure out that the movie had ended only until the Cinemax staff opened the Fire exit for us to leave so you can imagine :)

Confusion about Buzz

I see a lot of people often confusing Real Buzz with Aritifical buzz. Also within the concept of Buzz we have 1)forced ,fabricated buzz and 2)natural buzz or a combo of the two.

In simple words,

Buzz = feedback on Pre-release of a film based on promise of the theatrical trailer, vibe of the movie etc. These are natural factors.

In recent times,we had dabangg which had a buzz based on such factors. Its theatrical trailers impressed everyone and the film was not agressively promoted or pushed down people's throats. It released, people came in droves and loved the movie.

But ,Buzz can be created by aritificial means too and srk has been operative in this tactics for a long time.:Latest instance is ra-1.This aritificial Buzz is the result of a strong and aggressive marketing campaign. These Campaigns are the Programs with established start and stop moments, defined by time or money. This type of Buzz can spread quickly but its results are usually short-term.

Then there is Gimmick-driven buzz which is common, and it's a minefield, often exposing a soggy purpose or questionable values. MNIK was one such campaign when srk used Shiv Sena.

Such tactics are usually employed when the maker knows the natural factors ,to create the buzz, have failed. This is where over-compensation from the promoters starts with the objective of going for the kill and forcing the movie down peoples throats.

Other examples are OSO,TMK.Not many were enthusiastic about their promos or the general vibe of the movie but it was made-up as sort of a "must-watch"

Then there are promotion tactics like Ghajini where there is a combo of natural and artificial hype.

Ghajini's theatrical trailer response could be compared to the response that Ageenpath promo got recently meaning most people liked it.Then aamir took it upon himself to push the natural buzz a little more.It did help the movie though.
