The Farcical Terms - Blockbusters and All Time Blockbusters

The simplest concept of a successful movie is when it generates ROI. Over the years, trade and fanatics developed farcical terms like "Blockbusters" and "All Time Blockbusters" to satisfy the ego of the stars that they got paid from and to get fanatics attention. Most frequently these terms are used very loosely by Salman fans of late. Lets have a look at the so-called "Blockbusters" and "All time Blockbusters"

Lets have a look at the biggest grossers of 2011:

Bodyguard - 148 cr, Ready - 120 cr, ra.one - 118 cr, don2 - 107 cr, singham - 100 c,r znmd - 90 cr.

Ready is claimed to be a blockbuster by salman fans. But how can that be a blockbuster where there are atleast half a dozen films with the same lifetime range? Bodyguard is said to be a blockbuster which released an year after dabang that did 140 cr. So if Dabang was a BB, how come BG with just 8 cr more in an year be a BB as well?

Lets have a look at the biggest grossers of 2012:

ETT - 199 cr, Dabang 2 - 155cr, RR - 133 cr, JTHJ - 120 cr AP - 115 cr

If ETT is a blockbuster at 199 cr, how cna Dabang 2 be a blockbuster which did significantly lower than ETT?

Lets have a look at the biggest grossers of 2014:

PK - 340 cr, Kick - 231 cr, HNY - 203 cr, Bang Bang - 181 cr, Singham returns - 141 cr

In 2013 there were two 200 cr grossers which were CE - 215 cr and Krrish 3 at 245 cr. If these movies were blockbusters then how kick that came an year later and did less be a blockbuster especially when it made several distributors losses because of high selling price

In reality salman khan has given only 4 blockbusters  in the last 8 years which are Dabang, ETT, Bajrangi Bhaijaan and Sultan and they came far and few from the hoardes of movies that he did in between. In between this, his distributors have made losses for movies like Jai Ho, kick and PRDP. Then the big mother of all disasters - Tubelight.

His last and only All time Blockbuster was HAHK which featured Madhuri Dixit who was the lead and bigger star of her time. Besides HAHK, salman does not have even a All Time Grosser in a span of 25 years which other stars like Hrithik, Shahrukh and Aamir have given from time to time (Dhoom 2, OSO, RNBDJ, Ghajini, 3I, CE, Krrish 3, Dhoom 3, PK and Dangal)

So much for the "Stardom of Bhai"

Q. I read at a website that Tubelight made good profits for its producers so the distributors losses that the film suffered do not matter. How true is this analysis?

A. Every movie especially the big ones are either sold to individual distributors or corporate where the producer makes heavy profit. So giving a verdict based on producer profit is stupidity of the highest order. Then films like Kites and Ra.one should get blockbuster verdicts as they made 60-100 cr profit for their producers which is almost 100% profit compared to their budget. The verdicts of Box office is decided by the share that the distributors get from the theatrical run of a film which is typically 50% of the nett collections. Tubelight has netted around 118 cr which gives a DS of around 60 cr against selling price of 132 crores. Its losses are in the range of  72 crores and this is just the losses for Indian distributors. If you count overseas, the losses go to the north of 100 crores which was the budget of a Bombay velvet. To put things in perspective, Tubelight is the mother of all disasters. Regarding the website you are talking about, it is BoxOfficeIndia which is a KHan pr blog probably run by D company. We suggest you to go by Indian sources.

A. Kaabil budget is 35 crores and it was sold at an all India price of 50 crores. It made 67 cr DS in India and was a Hit at the Box Office. 87 crore figure is a fictitious number spread by the Khan PR blog BoxOfficeIndia.com which is a D company funded website. It has no Indian source or authenticity and is there to run a propaganda for khans. As per that site, the cost of Krrish 3 = Kaabil.

Q. What is the correct method to give Box office verdict. Should it be Lifetime collections?

A. Box Office verdict is only about ROI. ROI of the distributors. Lifetime collections have no meaning unless backed by its costs. For example an ADHM doing 100 cr is a hit while Tubelight doing 118 cr is a disaster. Its all about ROI.
